912 Head Removal Continued..........
The Diagram on the previous page shows the order in which the head nuts should be removed. This is to prevent warping, which is particularly important as the 912 engines are of aluminum construction. Once all of the head nuts have been removed, recover all of the washers. The Washers tend to stay on the head and need to be picked off. Now that the head is free it is clear that it will not clear the studs without the engine being raised.
With the front of the car securely supported on axel stands, slacken the drivers side engine mounting bolts, where they join the chassis. Do not remove them or back them off more than a few mm as they are used to hold one side of the engine down while the other is raised. On the passenger side undo the bolts completely so as the engine can be jacked up. Using a bottle or trolley jack, place the jack under the engine at the off side. (Remember to place a solid piece of wood between the jack and the sump so as not to cause any damage.) Slowly jack the engine until it has been raised sufficiently to allow the head to clear the studs.
