Early model Excels (VIN D2732 and before) are fitted with AC Delco motors. Matt Goddard has provided this information about refurbishing them.

There's not much that can go wrong with these simple electric motors other than corrosion, worn bushes, uneven wear or dried grease.
Although, the 1st one I did was smoking badly from the inaccessible coil that's fixed inside the case! Decided against using it!
1. Remove rubberised paint from 3x bolt heads on base plate. Run a blade around the bolts, and also around the join between the rectangular section of body and the top rounded section
2. Undo 3x bolts being careful not to round the heads. Where heads are damaged use a dremel cutter to create a slot in the head for a large Philips screwdriver
3. Remove the small bolt (bottom right on 1st picture)
4. Separate the 2 sections of the body, use a screwdriver to pry them apart if necessary and wiggle the rounded section by hand to remove it.
5. Remove the gear wheel from the rounded section
6. Free the 2x green clips (picture 2) from the lip in the metal case

7. Pull the unclipped board up (picture 3) - paying attention to 2x metal brushes against the central spindle (see copper items in picture 2). These are spring loaded. The springs remain in situ but the brushes will fall out.
8. One of the brushes is connected to the metal body, leave it that way by removing it from its sprung loaded locator before pulling the board over the top of spindle.
9. Remove the spindle. WARNING: A small brass locator (picture 4) sits at the bottom of the spindle, it might come out and is easily lost!

8. Use contact cleaner or cleaner of choice to clean the brass on the main spindle (picture 5) where the brushes make contact. Run a blade vertically in-between each section to remove debris. Lightly sand this area to round off any steps or friction creating textures. Clean a final time
9. Clean the board
10. Clean the brushes
11. Blow out charred debris from inside the case
12. Remove grease from the top section and threaded spindle. Check for grease remaining in the top section by running a cotton bud into the bore
13. Lubricate these same areas with fresh grease
14. Check over the large plastic gear wheel you removed from top section earlier. Teeth may be damaged if windows been jammed. File away rough edges. Re-grease the gear
15. If repainting - leave the bare metal area unpainted for it to contact the earth wire that connects to door beam
16. Slide the spindle into the main body
17. Place the board back over the spindle, relocate the 2x bushes into the sprung loaded receptacles, hold them in place until the board has been pushed and clipped fully into position (fun!)
18. Install the geared wheel into top section
19. Wiggle the top section onto the spindle until fully home
20. Reinstall the small plate on top section with the 1 bolt
21. Reinstall 3x bolts through base plate and into top section
22. Test by reconnecting in situ, or connect 1x terminal to battery live, and connect battery negative to bare metal body of motor. Test in both directions by swapping the live connector to the other connection on motor
